Meg Ryan’s Brownstone from “You’ve got Mail”

There are loads of films that I absolutely love and their movie sets are a big part of why I love them so much. I was sorting through some boxes in my house last night and came across one of my favourite movies “You’ve got Mail” with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. I put it on and realised instantly why I love that movie so much. And it isn’t down to the riveting storyline…

This is where Meg Ryan’s character Kathleen Kelly lives in the movie. A beautiful brownstone apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

Here’s Tom Hank’s character Joe Fox standing outside her door in the movie. I absolutely love the doors and the wrought iron railings covering the windows.

This is the first glimpse we get of Kathleen’s gorgeous apartment. It is so girly, quaint, cosy and homely. This movie was made in 1998 and I still think this interior is amazing. Not for everyone of course, but I love it. I love how the set designer included so many bookshelves in her apartment to show Kathleen’s love of books. She runs a gorgeous little bookstore called “The Shop Around the Corner” which she inherited from her mother. I have always loved browsing in a book shop, there’s just something about it. I’m not talking about a massive two-storey Easons but a lovely quaint book shop where you feel like you could pick up and browse through books all day long. Even better when they have a coffee shop in the book shop….mmmm. Ok, getting a little off track here!

This image shows those lovely french doors opening onto her dining area from her retro/vintage-style kitchen. I love the panelling that wraps right around her living space.

This is Kathleen’s kitchen. I just love it. My favourite part? The shabby, chippy-painted table under the window with the lamp on it and the vintage enamel bread bin underneath (have one just like it!) There is something about  having a table lamp in the kitchen that I looove-don’t ask me why. I love the idea of having ordinary furniture pieces like this in a kitchen, rather than all built-in cabinetry.

Here we can make out the lovely dresser beside the dining table storing all her china. I love how she has pictures of all shapes and sizes hanging on her walls..

This is looking back towards the front of the apartment where we can see the amazing bay windows with built-in window seats!! Loove window seats. And look at the amount of cushions? What a place to live this would be.

Here’s Kathleen at her desk ‘chatting’ with Joe Fox online. We get a great view of those packed bookshelves here. I love how she has lamps everywhere. I’m a massive fan of lamps, I can’t get enough of them. I very rarely use the overhead lights in my house, I much prefer softer moody lighting.

We get a good look here of all the detailing in the architraves and paneling and how about that stained glass window? Beautiful.

This is her living area to the left of the dining/kitchen. That mushy-looking sofa looks so cosy and inviting and perfect for movie-watching and snuggling!

This is her bedroom but later in the film her furniture gets moved around a bit (who knows why) Her bedroom is equally cosy and inviting.

This is her bedroom later in the movie with her bed angled over to the left side of the room and that green and cream painted cabinet looks very like the one that’s out in her main living space near the front door doesn’t it? (Picture up above)

This is other side of her room where we see another bay window with built-in window seats and that lovely pine chest of drawers with mirror which in the first picture we saw is over against the other wall. Have to say, this kinda thing bugs me! I’m a little obsessive about this sorta thing, can’t help it!

This is pretty much the only glimpse we get of her bathroom in the film but from what I can make out it looks gorgeous with its (what looks to be) marble-topped vanity unit and lovely wall sconces.

This is Kathleen’s quaint little children’s book shop that she sadly has to sell later in the film due to Joe Fox’s family opening a Fox Books megastore just around the corner. All in all I really like this movie, it’s a feel-good rom-com and stars one of my favourite actors Tom Hanks. Perfect film to watch if you’re planning on a quiet one in front of the fire. (yes, I had the stove lighting and it’s MAY!!!)

What do you think of this apartment? Did you enjoy the film? There are quite a lot of Meg Ryan films that have amazing sets which I’ll be blogging about soon too!

Have a great weekend! :)
